Getting started

Welcome to our Wikidata workshop!

Pull up a chair and get comfy.

First steps – Introductions

  1. Create a Wikidata account if you have not done so already (you can use the same login details as Wikipedia).
  2. Have a look at our Wikidata pages on our University of Edinburgh IS Skills site.
  3. Email me ewan.mcandrew@ed.ac.uk if you have any questions after today.

The Etherpad sheet – share your thoughts & questions!

The Etherpad sheet is there for you to share, take notes and share any of the cool Wikidata queries we explore or create during today’s session.

It is also where you can post questions. Anything I can’t answer, I will check with our helpful Wikidata community. Navino Evans has been our resident Wikidata expert for many years. You can follow him on Twitter @navinoevans.

NB: Think of him as Wikidata version of theĀ  Paperclip helper from the early versions of Microsoft Word.

#AskNav #Wikidata

Navino Evans – the Wikidata whisperer.

Navino Evans created the Histropedia site which creates visually dynamic timelines from Wikipedia pages and categories in minutes. View the category tree on Wikipedia.

Histropedia is one of many ways third party site that builds from the information in Wikipedia, as the largest reference work on the internet. More visualisations can be found at SeeAlso.org

Right – hands up who has edited Wikipedia before? Anyone edited Wikidata?

Imagine if the information stored in Wikipedia could be read by humans and machines.

Some Wiki Loves Monuments fun to start with:

  2. WLM UK tool: Click to see items of Wikidata of listed buildings and scheduled monuments requiring an image.
  3. WLM map tool: Type an address to see items of data on listed buildings and scheduled monuments requiring an image from around the world.
  4. Petscan tool: List of Wiki Loves Monuments pics for Scotland added in 2019 and their associated Wikidata item.
