{"id":872,"date":"2018-09-05T13:58:45","date_gmt":"2018-09-05T13:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/wir\/?p=872"},"modified":"2018-10-05T13:51:08","modified_gmt":"2018-10-05T13:51:08","slug":"ada-lovelace-day-1-month-to-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/wir\/ada-lovelace-day-1-month-to-go\/","title":{"rendered":"Ada Lovelace Day &#8211; 1 month to go!"},"content":{"rendered":"<article id=\"post-264\" class=\"post-264 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-ald18 category-news tag-ald18 tag-ald2018 has-author-avatar\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>On Tuesday 9th October 2018, the University\u2019s <a class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\" rel=\"nofollow\">Information Services<\/a> team are running an edit-a-thon to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day 2018 which is <a class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/findingada.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">an international celebration day<\/a> of the achievements of women in <a title=\"Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Science,_technology,_engineering,_and_mathematics\">science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a little over a month until Ada Lovelace Day 2018 so do pop it in your calendar now and we\u2019ll announce further details about the University\u2019s plans on our<a href=\"https:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/ada-lovelace-day\/\"> Ada Lovelace Day website shortly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year the event will have a particular focus on<strong><em> Contemporary<\/em> Women in STEM<\/strong> and #ALD2018 is to be hosted at the JCMB building (subject to room confirmation) with a evening networking event in the social space at the Joseph Black building (wine and nibbles supplied by the Royal Society of Chemistry).<\/p>\n<p>There will be a range of guest speakers in the morning followed by fun STEM activities in the afternoon (see below for details). Full Wikipedia editing training will be given at 2-3pm. Thereafter the afternoon\u2019s edit-a-thon will focus on improving the quality of Wikipedia articles related to <em><strong>Contemporary<\/strong> <\/em><a title=\"Women in STEM fields\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Women_in_STEM_fields\">Women in STEM<\/a>! This year we will also be hosting a Women in STEM data hackathon.<\/p>\n<p>Following on from last year&#8217;s panel discussion, to close the day there will be a more informal discussion and networking event. Five guest speakers from a variety of career stages have been invited to say a few words to promote discussion inc. Dr. Jenni Garden, Christina Miller Research Fellow at the School of Chemistry and Professor Lesley Yellowlees.<\/p>\n<p>All three events (morning, afternoon and evening) will be free and open to all so taking part in Ada Lovelace Day is as as easy as 1,2,3.<\/p>\n<p>You can book to attend one session, two sessions or all three and booking will open <em>very<\/em> soon. <a href=\"https:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/ada-lovelace-day\/\">Watch this space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Who is your STEM heroine?<\/h3>\n<p>A regular activity for Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) at the University of Edinburgh is the Wikipedia editing event or editathon. This year the focus is contemporary women in <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics\">STEM <\/abbr> who do not currently have Wikipedia pages.<\/p>\n<p>Nominate your contemporary STEM heroine for consideration at the Wikipedia editathon Tuesday 9th October.
