{"id":1,"date":"2014-08-11T12:23:57","date_gmt":"2014-08-11T12:23:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/wikidata-workshop\/?p=1"},"modified":"2025-04-02T13:47:28","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T13:47:28","slug":"hello-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/wikidata-workshop\/hello-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction to Wikidata"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>What is <\/b><b>Wikidata<\/b><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Main_Page\">Wikidata<\/a> is a free linked database of secondary data that can be read and edited by both humans and machines.<\/p>\n<p>Wikidata acts as central storage for the structured data of its Wikimedia sister projects including Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikisource, and others.<\/p>\n<p>NB: You can access the other projects from the foot of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\">Wikipedia&#8217;s front page<\/a> and from the foot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Main_Page\">Wikidata&#8217;s front page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/m_9_23jXPoE\">A beginners guide to utilising Wikimedia&#8217;s linked open data platform<\/a> (3 minute video by the National Library of Wales).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Wikidata actually?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A repository of the world&#8217;s knowledge.<\/li>\n<li>A database that anyone can read and edit.<\/li>\n<li>multilingual.<\/li>\n<li>designed to deal with the reality Wikidata has to deal with.<\/li>\n<li>free and open source software.<\/li>\n<li>All data is CC-0 licenced meaning it can be used by anyone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Watch &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Wj8na1GFXMs\">The global knowledge base: open data about everything | Dr. Martin Poulter<\/a> | 15 minute TEDx talk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The main links you need to be aware of:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Main_Page\">Wikidata<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/query.wikidata.org\/\">The Wikidata Query Service<\/a> &#8211; for getting data <em>out<\/em> of Wikidata.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Tools\/External_tools\">Wikidata tools<\/a> &#8211; lots of handy tools for working with Wikidata here.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hay.toolforge.org\/propbrowse\/\">The Propbrowse tool<\/a> in particular is very useful.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:SPARQL_query_service\/queries\">Wikidata example queries<\/a> &#8211; use these as a jumping off point for creating your own!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/User:MartinPoulter\/queries\">Dr. Martin Poulter&#8217;s Wikidata queries<\/a> &#8211; more excellent query ideas here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Some stats about Wikidata<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wikidata will be THIRTEEN years old as of October 2025. Happy birthday Wikidata!<\/li>\n<li>116.8 million unique items of data. (67 million more items since November 2017).<\/li>\n<li>1,247,700,645+ statements within these items of data.<\/li>\n<li>2,333,228,211 edits since it launched in 2012.<\/li>\n<li>~25,152 active users.<\/li>\n<li>313 approved bots.<\/li>\n<li>scholarly articles: 22,574,314 items (31.5% of total items)<\/li>\n<li>humans: 6,376,879 items (8.9% of total items)<\/li>\n<li>architectural structures: \u00a03,159,472 (4.4% of total items)<\/li>\n<li>More detail at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Statistics\">Wikidata Statistics<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>A short intro to the main tools when adding data to Wikidata<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>NB: <\/b>Firstly consult Wikidata\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Data_Import_Guide\">Data Import Hub.<\/a><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>1.<b>Manual editing <\/b>by user. (<a href=\"https:\/\/media.ed.ac.uk\/media\/1_q8oiocay\">Video tutorial<\/a> 1) (<a href=\"https:\/\/media.ed.ac.uk\/media\/How+to+edit+Wikidata\/1_xb692o02\">Video tutorial 2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>2.<b>Mass editing <\/b>using tools e.g.<\/p>\n<p>a)The <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/mix-n-match\/\">Mix n Match tool <\/a>allows you to match an external data set to Wikidata items.<\/p>\n<p>b)Importing data from Google Spreadsheets into the <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/quickstatements\/\">Quickstatements<\/a> tool. (<a href=\"https:\/\/media.ed.ac.uk\/media\/1_whznh2og\">Video tutorial 1<\/a>) (<a href=\"https:\/\/media.ed.ac.uk\/media\/1_a26vivqq\">Video tutorial 2<\/a>). The syntax you need is explained in <u><a href=\"http:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/wikidata-todo\/quick_statements.php\">QuickStatements <\/a><\/u><u><a href=\"http:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/wikidata-todo\/quick_statements.php\">v.1<\/a><\/u> and you can use the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/wikipedia-and-wikidata-to\/aiilcelhmpllcgkhhpifagfehbddkdfp?hl=en\">Wikidata plug-in<\/a><\/u> for Google Sheets to make wrangling the data in Google Sheets easier.<\/p>\n<p>c) <strong>RECOMMENDED method:<\/strong> Open source software <a href=\"https:\/\/openrefine.org\/\">OpenRefine<\/a> (previously known as Google Refine) has a nifty Wikidata plugin to help reconcile and clean up data ready for export to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Help:QuickStatements\">QuickStatements<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Tools\/OpenRefine\">OpenRefine guidance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=File%3AOpenRefine_Beginners_Tutorial_by_Emma_Carroll.webm\">beginners video tutorial<\/a> and a new <a href=\"https:\/\/media.ed.ac.uk\/media\/1_uro2ssh3\">Bulk Editing\/Data Item Creation with OpenRefine tutorial<\/a> by student intern, Maggie Lin.<\/p>\n<p>3.<b>Bot <\/b><b>editing <\/b>(making edits over the API) e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/User:ProteinBoxBot\">ProteinBoxBot<\/a><\/p>\n<p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Bot_requests\">Bots request <\/a>section of the Data Import Guide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Wikidata?
