That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important that we take the opportunity to document our cultural heritage <em>now<\/em> for future generations before it is too late.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Wiki Loves Monuments<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The world\u2019s largest photo competition, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk\/\">Wiki Loves Monuments<\/a>, takes place for the whole of September each year but you can take pictures all year round. After days out, weekend breaks and holidays at home &amp; abroad, there will be gigabytes of pics taken in recent months and years. These could remain on your memory card or be shared to Commons in September and help <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/c\/c7\/Illustrating_Wikipedia_brochure_%28Wiki_Education_Foundation%29.pdf\">illustrate Wikipedia<\/a> for the benefit of all. This is because articles with pictures are <em>at least<\/em> 20-30% more likely to be read. Entry is free and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk\/judging\">the best pics will win a prize<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The handy <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/wlmuk\/#\/\">Wiki Loves Monuments UK tool<\/a> which shows you places near you, indicated with a red dot, that require a pic.<\/p>\n<h6 id=\"attachment_569\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-569\" src=\"http:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/wir\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2017\/09\/WLM-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" \/>Wiki Loves Monuments \u2013 dynamic map of Edinburgh showing listed buildings requiring an image (in red).<\/h6>\n<p>You just take a quick look at the map, take a pic and upload. This game just asks you to check the image depicts what the item is about.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/zone47.com\/crotos\/?l=en\">Crotos<\/a> \u2013 find images that depict, for example, &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">pink<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">candles<\/span>&#8216; in this data-driven image viewer. Display the information in different languages. Then create image fragments with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iiif.io\">IIIF<\/a> URL for Wikimedia Commons image files, and to provide values for the Wikidata property <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Property:P2677\">relative position within image \/ P2677<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>Examples: for fragments on an artwork, <a href=\"http:\/\/zone47.com\/crotos\/lab\/cropper\/get.php?q=21013224\">Virgin among the Virgins, G\u00e9rard David<\/a> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/zone47.com\/crotos\/lab\/cropper\/get.php?q=14619165\">Ancient Rome, Giovanni Paolo Panin<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>For an item depicted by several artworks. <a href=\"http:\/\/zone47.com\/crotos\/lab\/cropper\/p180iiif.php\">Search<\/a>. Example: <a href=\"http:\/\/zone47.com\/crotos\/lab\/cropper\/p180iiif.php?q=302\">Jesus Christ<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/meta.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/WikiShootMe\">WikiShootMe<\/a> \u2013 find places near you that are not represented online with a pic.<\/li>\n<li>Explore local cultural heritage with <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/monumental\/#\/\">Monumental.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Use Flickr? Why not try the <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.wmflabs.org\/flickr2commons\/#interface_language=en\">Flickr2Commons tool <\/a>to import your images easily into Wikimedia Commons on an open licence?
