The University provides the\u00a0Service on the understanding that\u00a0content appearing on a blog\u00a0remains\u00a0the responsibility of the\u00a0Posting User. The Academic Blogging Service has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweb.ed.ac.uk\/files\/atoms\/files\/uoe_academic_blogging_notice_and_takedown_policy_v1.0.pdf\">Notice and Take Down Policy<\/a> that outlines procedures if a\u00a0person\u00a0finds\u00a0material on a blog that they believe to be inappropriate,\u00a0including\u00a0 material that\u00a0may violate that person\u2019s\u00a0rights.\u00a0The University has a statutory duty to uphold,\u00a0as\u00a0far as it considers reasonable,\u00a0the academic freedom of its staff.<br \/>\n<a name=\"sharing\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Think about the information you share on your blog<\/h3>\n<p>You can choose whether to keep your blog posts private, or whether to share them publicly.\u00a0 Think about the content you share on your blog, particularly with regard to sensitive or personally identifiable information.<\/p>\n<p>Take care if you are writing about topics that may be controversial or that some readers may find offensive or upsetting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>Think about how controversial you want to be.\u00a0Calibrate the degree of controversy according to risk; in general, only be prepared to put something on a blog that you&#8217;d be prepared to say to someone&#8217;s face (or shout out in a crowded room).<\/em><br \/>\nAcademic Blogging Top Ten Tips, Tom Crick and Alan Winfield, The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/higher-education-network\/blog\/2013\/dec\/13\/how-to-academic-blogging-tips\">https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/higher-education-network\/blog\/2013\/dec\/13\/how-to-academic-blogging-tips<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"comments\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Dealing with comments<\/h3>\n<p>Unmoderated commenting is turned <em>off<\/em> by default on all blogs hosted on blogs.ed.ac.uk.\u00a0 In order for a comment to appear on your blog you must approve it first. This blog is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike licence, unless otherwise indicated.<\/p>\n<p>CC BY, Jane Smith, University of Edinburgh, 2018.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The University has an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/files\/atoms\/files\/openeducationalresourcespolicy.pdf\">Open Educational Resources (OER) policy<\/a>\u00a0that encourages staff and students to share resources they create under <a href=\"http:\/\/open.ed.ac.uk\/how-to-guides\/how-to-apply-a-cc-license-on-a-publishing-platform-youtubeflickrwordpress\/\">Creative Commons<\/a> open licences.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/open.ed.ac.uk\/\">OER Service<\/a> provides advice and guidance to staff and students on finding, creating, and using open licensed content, and understanding open licences.\u00a0 To find out about the OER Service&#8217;s workshops and training sessions visit our <a href=\"http:\/\/open.ed.ac.uk\/events\/\">Events<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>If you share third party content, e.g. images or media created by others, on your blog you must make sure that they are in the public domain, have been released under open licence, or that you have explicit permission to use the content. \u00a0The University has a wealth of open licensed content on <a href=\"https:\/\/media.ed.ac.uk\/\">Media Hopper Create<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/open.ed.ac.uk\/\">Open.Ed<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/crcedinburgh\">Flickr<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/images.is.ed.ac.uk\/\">Image Collections<\/a>, that you can add to your blog posts.<\/p>\n<p>There are different ways to add\u00a0 licence information to your blog.\u00a0 You can add a licence statement to your whole blog using a text widget, this means the licence information will appear on each page.\u00a0 You can add licence information manually to individual images.
