For me, writing begets writing. The blog doesn\u2019t distract from my formal academic or scholarly work. It feeds it.<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/3-Rules-of-Academic-Blogging\/234139\">3 Rules of Academic Blogging<\/a>, David Perry, The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>Sometimes a blog post will be more valuable than a book, because a. It is open access so more people can reach it; b. it is shorter, so busier people can read it; c. It is simpler language than more scholarly work, so more practitioners can understand it, and d. Overly scholarly language may not be helpful if you want to share your ideas with the general public. Try to avoid jargon and if you do include acronyms or technical terms add links or a brief glossary to explain the terms.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">????\ufe0f  When you talk about science, are you sure the words you are using don&#39;t mean something different to others?<\/p>\n<p>Here are 5\u20e3 examples of scientific jargon to use with caution \u26a0\ufe0f | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ResearchCulture?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ResearchCulture<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ScienceTwitter?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ScienceTwitter<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Pe3q1XkhGW\">pic.twitter.com\/Pe3q1XkhGW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Wellcome (@wellcometrust) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wellcometrust\/status\/1168481192175226880?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 2, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>You may be writing primarily for your own benefit, to keep a record of events you\u2019ve attended, projects you have worked on, talks you\u2019ve given, or to reflect on your practice.\u00a0 These blog posts may be longer and less structured than blog posts you share with other readers.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"engaging\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Engaging with your readers<\/h3>\n<p>Engage with your readers.\u00a0 The best blogs are part of a conversation. \u00a0Use social media to amplify your posts and encourage people to engage.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be discouraged if you don\u2019t get many comments on your blog, you may find that your posts spark discussion on other platforms such as Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Add images and media to engage your readers.\u00a0 You can embed content from other social media platforms such as Media Hopper Create, You Tube and Twitter.\u00a0 Some bloggers use images to create a strong identity for their blog.<\/p>\n<p>Use tags and categories to organise your content and make sure your readers can find it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>Encourage people to comment (but only post their comments after moderation) and respond to comments and to Tweets. Talk to people on Twitter and Facebook when they discuss your work.
