I am a fan of Burns night and I’ve hosted<\/a> a few spirited and toasted lassies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This year I have invited my teams to a virtual Burns night on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u2018Please bring your favourite poem\/ song\/dance by\u00a0Burns\u00a0or any of his contemporaries or similar Scottish music. Burns was prolific and one of the joys of his work is that you can find a poem or a view from him on just about anything.\u00a0 If you can find his view on Brexit \u2018While Europe’s eye is fix’d on mighty things\u2019<\/em>, COVID \u2018Tae a virus\u2019<\/em> , lockdown \u2018Here’s friends locked doon on baith sides o’ the firth\u2019<\/em>, working from home, social distancing \u2018Gin a body meet a body, catching Covid, Aye?<\/em>\u2019,\u00a0 face coverings \u2018Fair fa\u2019 your honest, covered face\u2026\u2019<\/em>, well-being, hobbies, black lives, sourdough, furlough, home-schooling \u2018The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley\u2019<\/em>,\u00a0 Teams \u2018To see oursels as others see us!<\/em>\u2019 or elearning\u00a0 you\u2019ll win a fab prize.’<\/p>\n

Haggis is just haggis, a smile is just a smile.<\/p>\n

Our virtual Burns Night featured beautiful music performances from Lauren (Wild Mountainside) and Lorraine ( The Silver Tassie), and the suggestion that we all upload pictures of our haggis dinners to Wikipedia.<\/p>\n

During the evening a number of lost Burns manuscripts were given their first public performance. A selection is curated below:<\/p>\n

When chapman billies leave the street<\/em>
\nAnd drouthy neebors video meet<\/em>
\nAs Waitrose delivery is running late<\/em>
\nAn\u2019 folk begin to accept their fate;<\/em>
\nWhile we sat boozing at the telly<\/em>
\nAnd getting fou and awfy smelly<\/em>
\nWe think na on the lang Scots miles.<\/em>
\nThe fit bit steps we tracked with smiles<\/em>
\nThat lie between us and our hame<\/em>
\nWhare sits our sulky sullen dame<\/em>
\nGathering her brows like gathering storm<\/em>
\nNursing her Deliveroo to keep it warm.<\/em><\/p>\n

So, Shall Distance<\/b><\/p>\n

This tale o’ truth\u00a0 I shall read,<\/em>
\nwoman and mother’s son take heed;<\/em>
\nWhene’er to drink you are inclin’d,<\/em>
\nOr social joys run in your mind,<\/em>
\nThink! ye may buy joys for now<\/em>
\nBut wi’ mair pox horrible and awfu’,<\/em>
\nThree lawyers says it is unlawfu’.<\/em><\/p>\n

Argyle Epistle<\/b><\/p>\n

We think na on the lang Scots miles,\u00a0<\/em>
\nThe mosses, waters, slaps, and styles,\u00a0<\/em>
\nThat lie between us and our hame in argyle house,\u00a0<\/em>
\nAh, gentle dames! it gars me greet, \u00a0<\/em>
\nTo think how many counsels sweet, \u00a0<\/em>
\nHow many lengthen’d, sage advices, \u00a0<\/em>
\nThe workers wish the boss, consise is.<\/em><\/p>\n

Hoppers Lament<\/b><\/p>\n

That dreary hour she opens Teams in;<\/em>
\nOn such a night she was online in.<\/em>
\nThe storm without might rair and rustle,<\/em>
\nKaren did na mind the storm a whistle.<\/em>
\nTill first ae system, syne anither,
\n<\/span>Gave up working\u00a0 a’ thegither, <\/em>
\nAnd roars out, \u201cMedia Hopper doesnae work!\u201d <\/em>
\nAnd in an instant all was dark:\u00a0<\/em>
\nAnd scarcely had she Liam rallied,\u00a0<\/em>
\nWhen out the hellish legion sallied.<\/em><\/p>\n

As bees bizz out wi’ angry fyke, <\/em>
\nWhen plundering herds assail their byke; <\/em>
\nAs eager runs the market-crowd, <\/em>
\nWhen “Catch the thief!” resounds aloud; <\/em>
\nSo Karen runs, the witches follow, <\/em>
\nWi’ mony an eldritch skriech and hollo.<\/em><\/p>\n

To LISC\u00a0 Ah, Karen thou’ll get thy fairin’!<\/em>
\nIn ITC they’ll roast thee like a herrin’!<\/em>
\nAnd KSC awaits thy commin’!<\/em><\/p>\n

The Cotter’s\u00a0 Night Locked In<\/b><\/p>\n

O Scotia! my dear, my native soil!<\/em>
\nFor whom my warmest wish to Heaven is sent,<\/em>
\nLong may thy hardy staff of IT toil<\/em>
\nBe blest with health, and peace, and sweet open content!<\/em>
\nAnd O! may Heaven their simple lives prevent<\/em>
\nFrom covid\u2019s contagion, weak and vile!<\/em>
\nThen howe\u2019er crowns and coronets be rent,<\/em>
\nA virtuous populace may rise the while,<\/em>
\nAnd stand a wall of fire around their much-lov\u2019d isle.<\/em><\/p>\n
