Burns was prolific and one of the joys of his work is that you can find a poem or a view from him on just about anything.\u00a0 If you can find his view on Brexit \u2018<em>While Europe&#8217;s eye is fix&#8217;d on mighty things\u2019<\/em>, COVID \u2018<em>Tae a virus\u2019<\/em> , lockdown \u2018<em>Here&#8217;s friends locked doon on baith sides o&#8217; the firth\u2019<\/em>, working from home, social distancing \u2018<em>Gin a body meet a body, catching Covid, Aye?<\/em>\u2019,\u00a0 face coverings \u2018<em>Fair fa\u2019 your honest, covered face\u2026\u2019<\/em>, well-being, hobbies, black lives, sourdough, furlough, home-schooling <em>\u2018The best laid schemes o&#8217; mice an&#8217; men gang aft agley\u2019<\/em>,\u00a0 Teams \u2018<em>To see oursels as others see us!<\/em>\u2019 or elearning\u00a0 you\u2019ll win a fab prize.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Haggis is just haggis, a smile is just a smile.<\/p>\n<p>Our virtual Burns Night featured beautiful music performances from Lauren (Wild Mountainside) and Lorraine ( The Silver Tassie), and the suggestion that we all upload pictures of our haggis dinners to Wikipedia.<\/p>\n<p>During the evening a number of lost Burns manuscripts were given their first public performance. A selection is curated below:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tam O&#8217;2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>When chapman billies leave the street<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And drouthy neebors video meet<\/em><br \/>\n<em>As Waitrose delivery is running late<\/em><br \/>\n<em>An\u2019 folk begin to accept their fate;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>While we sat boozing at the telly<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And getting fou and awfy smelly<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We think na on the lang Scots miles.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The fit bit steps we tracked with smiles<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That lie between us and our hame<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Whare sits our sulky sullen dame<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Gathering her brows like gathering storm<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Nursing her Deliveroo to keep it warm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>So, Shall Distance<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em>This tale o&#8217; truth\u00a0 I shall read,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>woman and mother&#8217;s son take heed;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Whene&#8217;er to drink you are inclin&#8217;d,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Or social joys run in your mind,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Think! ye may buy joys for now<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But wi&#8217; mair pox horrible and awfu&#8217;,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Three lawyers says it is unlawfu&#8217;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Argyle Epistle<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em>We think na on the lang Scots miles,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The mosses, waters, slaps, and styles,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That lie between us and our hame in argyle house,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ah, gentle dames! it gars me greet, \u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To think how many counsels sweet, \u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>How many lengthen&#8217;d, sage advices, \u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The workers wish the boss, consise is.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Hoppers Lament<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em>That dreary hour she opens Teams in;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>On such a night she was online in.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The storm without might rair and rustle,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Karen did na mind the storm a whistle.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem\">Till first ae system, syne anither,<br \/>\n<\/span>Gave up working\u00a0 a&#8217; thegither, <\/em><br \/>\n<em>And roars out, \u201cMedia Hopper doesnae work!\u201d <\/em><br \/>\n<em>And in an instant all was dark:\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And scarcely had she Liam rallied,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>When out the hellish legion sallied.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As bees bizz out wi&#8217; angry fyke, <\/em><br \/>\n<em>When plundering herds assail their byke; <\/em><br \/>\n<em>As eager runs the market-crowd, <\/em><br \/>\n<em>When &#8220;Catch the thief!&#8221; resounds aloud; <\/em><br \/>\n<em>So Karen runs, the witches follow, <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Wi&#8217; mony an eldritch skriech and hollo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To LISC\u00a0 Ah, Karen thou&#8217;ll get thy fairin&#8217;!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>In ITC they&#8217;ll roast thee like a herrin&#8217;!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And KSC awaits thy commin&#8217;!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>The Cotter&#8217;s\u00a0 Night Locked In<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em>O Scotia! my dear, my native soil!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For whom my warmest wish to Heaven is sent,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Long may thy hardy staff of IT toil<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Be blest with health, and peace, and sweet open content!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And O! may Heaven their simple lives prevent<\/em><br \/>\n<em>From covid\u2019s contagion, weak and vile!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Then howe\u2019er crowns and coronets be rent,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A virtuous populace may rise the while,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And stand a wall of fire around their much-lov\u2019d isle.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am a fan of Burns night and I&#8217;ve hosted a few spirited and toasted lassies.
