Did you spot the MOOC production team in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episode\/p08zhgmb\/traces-series-1-episode-1\">BBC Drama &#8216;Traces&#8217; on the telly in January 2021<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Val McDermid&#8217;s drama was written alongside a MOOC developed by University of Dundee.<\/p>\n<p>That MOOC is now dead. It&#8217;s an x-mooc.<\/p>\n<p>But at Edinburgh MOOCs are alive and kicking.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Three new University of Edinburgh MOOC courses <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were launched in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the first half of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 2020<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (Data Ethics, AI and Responsible Innovation; COVID-19 Critical Care: Understanding and Application; Making Blended Education Work)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, two are in their final stages of development <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Christian-Muslim Relations: History, Scripture, Theology, Politics; <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chronic Respiratory Diseases in Primary Care Settings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and will launch in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">early\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As with other areas of University activity, Covid-19 has had an impact on our activities. Early in the pandemic Learning, Teaching, and Web Services were able to help the Critical Care team in MVM respond to a global shortage in health professionals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> trained to work in critical care settings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by redeveloping teaching materials from an online <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">masters<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> degree into a MOOC delivered on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FutureLearn<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The course was launched in early April and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rapidly achieved 46,138 enrolments worldwide, filling an essential gap in training for frontline workers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ver the summer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in response shift to hybrid teaching and the need to support new students with the information and study skills they would need for this new way of learning in higher education <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">de<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">livered<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 5<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">new <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">student<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">acing courses on Learn to help our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> new and returning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> students transition to hybrid teaching.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> These courses were designed to scale, making them available as cross-cutting, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">institution<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-wide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> courses for all students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We anticipate capacity to develop new courses in early 2021 and will work with the MOOC strategy group to align<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">with emerging adaptation and renewal strategies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the last year MOOCs have had direct links to University strategies including;\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" priorities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in April 2020 the MOOC \u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">COVID-19 Critical Care: Understanding and Application<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d was <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rapidly produced to facilitate sharing of resources <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as part of the University\u2019s response to the global pandemic. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The fact that the materials have been developed in conjunction with the OER service in ISG ensures that we are able to support the university\u2019s strategic goals in delivering open educational resources easi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ly, across global platforms.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Looking forward<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the MOOC Strategy Group will be <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">asked to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">consider how MOOCs can support <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the University\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">adaption and renewal<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">R<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ecommendation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">will <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">include <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1)<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">closer alignment between<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> MOOCs <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and online<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">asters<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">programmes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2) <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enabling opportunities for recruitment and sustainable repurposing of teaching materials and resources<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3)<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">closer alignment of MOOC production to the work being done in curriculum review and values<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">based education in the Edinburgh offer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 4) contribution to the global demand for staff\/faculty development support for online learning through the sharing o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f an<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Edinburgh model fo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r online tea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MOOCs continue to be a recruitment tools which gives the University a visible and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">high quality<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> presence on global platform<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> where learners search for online courses.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> The numbers of people worldwide who have been searching for online learning during the global pandemic lockdown has increased hugely. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is an area of recruitment activity which is ripe for further investment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The LTW teams continue to work with academic colleagues to get the best value for money and return on investment from MOOC materials. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Fundamentals of Music Theory MOOC continues to be a popular course running on Coursera. The academic team have already repurposed the core materials of the course into a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">20 credit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> level 7 foundation course for UG applicants <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to the music <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">programme<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">who do not have A pass marks at <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A-Level or <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Advanced<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Higher (or have passed the MOOC). The team also have a pending student experience grant application proposal to further repurpose the materials as an eBook. This is a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n excellent <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">example of how the investment in high quality teaching materials can be maximized by ensuring activities are aligned.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> The course <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018Learning for Sustainability: Developing a Personal Ethic\u2019, which has not run since 2015 is being updated and\u00a0will be relaunched on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FutureLearn<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> soon.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Globally there has been an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> increased <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">interest in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> online education and the demand<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">has <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">contin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ued<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">flexible <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lifelong learning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that supports changes in the w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">orkplace<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Discussions about <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">microcredentialling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> continue at national level with in the SFC and internationally via UNA Europa.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> To enable this flexibility there is growing interest in both stand-alone for-credit courses and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">microcredentials<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he idea of bundling short courses to provide micro-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">programmes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">microcredentials<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is something each of our MOOC <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">platform <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">partners are working<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> develop<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> new products that work for both universities and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> lifelong learner. We have been working<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with partners<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a number of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> experiments in this area<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, keeping Edinburgh at the forefront of this innovation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prioritised<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> linguistic accessibility\u00a0during the production of \u2018Nitrogen: A Global Challenge\u2019 MOOC on\u00a0edX. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To truly make an impact, the course would have to reach practitioners whose daily work is directly affected by nitrogen, such as farmers\u00a0around\u00a0the world.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ne of the goals of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">team<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is to\u00a0create translations <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and it <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is currently available in\u00a0seven\u00a0languages\u00a0(English, Hindi, Sinhalese, Urdu, Nepalese, Dari,\u00a0and\u00a0Hungarian)\u00a0three\u00a0more translations <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bengali, Maldivian and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dzonhgka<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) are on the way. In future, we plan to translate the course to several other major world languages such as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spanish<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chinese<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to cover the\u00a0four\u00a0most spoken languages of the world (English, Hindi, Spanish and Chinese).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2019 the University\u2019s Business School launched its first credited <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">microcredential<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MicroMasters<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Predictive Analytics, on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">edX<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In October 2020 the Bus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ness School launched <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> further <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Professional Certificate in Marketing Fundamentals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">no<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for-credit,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> two course<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> CPD<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">programme<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">also delivered <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">X<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. We are currently working with the Vet School to bundle three existing MOOCs as a \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Specialisation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Coursera<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (also not-for-credit)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a launch date early in the first half of next year. These experiments will provide valuable feedback on the demand for different types <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">microcredentials<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on our different partner platforms, helping the University to make informed decisions for targeted future activities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking of representations of learning technologists in the media.
