No rights reserved by me.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">The University has\u00a0offered\u00a0lecture recording\u00a0on an opt-in basis\u00a0for around ten years\u00a0and\u00a0recently made significant investment\u00a0to provide a new\u00a0central\u00a0lecture recording service, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/information-services\/learning-technology\/media-hopper-replay\">Media Hopper Replay<\/a>,\u00a0in September 2017.\u00a0\u00a0The new service is running\u00a0successfully so far\u00a0with\u00a0a good\u00a0many colleagues using it to deliver recordings of their lectures\u00a0for their\u00a0students\u00a0to review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Beginning the second semester of our new service we have more than 60,000 recordings made to the end of December.\u00a0 It is very popular with students with around 190,000 student views.\u00a0\u00a0December was the top month for replaying content \u2013 over 70,000 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span class=\"x_eop\">\u00a0<\/span>We are consulting, on behalf of\u00a0Senate\u00a0Learning and Teaching Committee,\u00a0 on\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiki.ed.ac.uk\/display\/LRec\/Policy+Consultation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">proposed new lecture recording policy\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">to support\u00a0us\u00a0in\u00a0consistently delivering\u00a0the benefits of the service\u00a0both\u00a0to students and\u00a0to\u00a0staff.<span class=\"x_eop\">\u00a0<\/span>.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_eop\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><b>Please submit your responses or questions<\/b><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><b> by 19 February 2018.\u202f\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">The\u00a0new\u00a0policy seeks to maximise the number of lectures recorded, and\u00a0hence\u00a0the consistency of the student experience,\u00a0while retaining appropriate scope for a lecturer to opt out of recording a lecture where the interests in not recording outweigh the interests in recording.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_eop\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">It\u00a0is\u00a0intended\u00a0that the\u00a0lecture recording\u00a0policy\u00a0will\u00a0provide\u00a0the\u00a0necessary\u00a0clarity and reassurance\u00a0to\u00a0lecturers and students on\u00a0data use, data security and data protection; intellectual property rights within the recordings; avoidance of copyright infringement; and equality of access to lectures and recordings.<\/span><span class=\"x_eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">Assuming the new policy comes\u00a0into force\u00a0in Summer 2018,\u00a0it\u00a0will\u00a0dovetail\u00a0with an integration of the lecture recording service\u00a0and\u00a0the timetabling system and\u00a0with\u00a0an expansion of the service to\u00a0cover\u00a0nearly 300 rooms.\u00a0\u00a0Indeed, given the ongoing expansion of the service, the\u00a0availability of comprehensive\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/information-services\/learning-technology\/media-hopper-replay\/training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">training<\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">,\u00a0and continued demand from students,\u00a0I would\u00a0encourage\u00a0colleagues in\u00a0all\u00a0Schools to consider initiating\u00a0or expanding\u00a0their use of the service\u00a0this\u00a0semester.<\/span><span class=\"x_eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">For\u00a0the text of\u00a0the\u00a0proposed\u00a0policy\u00a0and full supporting information, please\u00a0review\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiki.ed.ac.uk\/display\/LRec\/Policy+Consultation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">consultation website<\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">\u00a0that is\u00a0now\u00a0available\u00a0to all staff and students.\u00a0\u00a0(EASE authentication required.)\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">While the consultation encourages colleagues and students to contribute to aggregate responses, it also leaves open the option for them to respond individually.<\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">In addition to responses from Heads of\u00a0Schools,\u00a0Colleges\u00a0and Support Groups, we are also seeking the views of\u00a0the trade unions, of students via the\u00a0Students\u2019 Association and of <\/span>conveners of the Knowledge Strategy Committee, Library Committee, the Directors of Teaching network, the Lecture Recording Programme Board, Academic User Group and Engagement and Evaluation Group.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;d like to hear from you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University has\u00a0offered\u00a0lecture recording\u00a0on an opt-in basis\u00a0for around ten years\u00a0and\u00a0recently made significant investment\u00a0to provide a new\u00a0central\u00a0lecture recording service, Media Hopper Replay,\u00a0in September 2017.\u00a0\u00a0The new service is running\u00a0successfully so far\u00a0with\u00a0a good\u00a0many colleagues using it to deliver recordings of their lectures\u00a0for their\u00a0students\u00a0to review.
