{"id":1,"date":"2014-08-11T12:23:57","date_gmt":"2014-08-11T12:23:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/eahil-editathon\/?p=1"},"modified":"2018-07-15T11:00:41","modified_gmt":"2018-07-15T11:00:41","slug":"lets_get_started","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/eahil-editathon\/lets_get_started\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s get started"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trusted more than the BBC, Guardian and Telegraph (<a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/news\/2014\/08\/09\/more-british-people-trust-wikipedia-trust-news\/\">Jordan, 2014<\/a>), Wikipedia receives some 17 billion pageviews from 500 million visitors each month and is estimated to be 1,500 times more cost effective than traditional ways of spreading information, such as presenting at academic conferences (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2017\/10\/10\/updating-wikipedia-part-doctors-jobs\/?s_campaign=stat:rss&amp;utm_content=buffer35a41&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\">Heilman, Masukume, Kipersztok, Shafee and Diptanshu, 2017<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A 2016 study found that 87.5% of students reported using Wikipedia for their academic work (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1096751615000585?via%3Dihub\">Selwyn and Gorard, 2016<\/a>) so for many students this will be the first port-of-call when engaging with new topics.<\/p>\n<p>The reason being that when we explain these topics to students \u2013 why wouldn\u2019t they look them up on Wikipedia? And what they tend to find is American examples, old citations, pages conflating theory with practice etc.<\/p>\n<p>For this workshop, we have already identified articles that need work to allow you to make edits and improvements in a relatively short amount of time.
