{"id":406,"date":"2020-09-28T14:44:37","date_gmt":"2020-09-28T14:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/ada-lovelace-day\/?p=406"},"modified":"2024-12-04T11:50:17","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T11:50:17","slug":"ada-lovelace-day-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/ada-lovelace-day\/ada-lovelace-day-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Ada Lovelace Day 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday 13th October 2020, the University\u2019s Information Services team are running a range of events to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day 2020 which is <a class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/findingada.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">an international celebration day<\/a>\u00a0of the achievements of women in\u00a0<a title=\"Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Science,_technology,_engineering,_and_mathematics\">science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year #ALD2020 will have a series of lightning talks, fun &amp; impactful Wikipedia editing activities and evening networking events. With social distancing restrictions in place it is even more important that we come together online to celebrate and support one another this year.<\/p>\n<p>#WomenInSTEM assemble!<\/p>\n<h2>Programme overview<\/h2>\n<p>The day is split in four parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>12pm-1pm: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.events.ed.ac.uk\/index.cfm?event=showEventDetails&amp;scheduleId=43391&amp;start=&amp;eventssearch=ada%20lovelace&amp;eventStart=0\">Lunchtime lightning talks<\/a> &#8211; online Zoom meeting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1.30-5pm:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh\/Events_and_Workshops\/Ada_Lovelace_Day_2020#1:30pm_to_5pm:_a_Women_in_STEM_editathon\">Women in STEM- a Wikipedia editing event<\/a> to create new articles focused on the lives and contributions of notable women in science, technology, engineering and maths.<\/li>\n<li>5pm-7pm: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/euwistem-ada-lovelace-day-tickets-123945872441\">Networking event &#8211; Women in STEM Society.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>7pm-8.15pm: <a href=\"https:\/\/uofglasgow.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/WN_d0yrOAdNS2qkdaSZlhJMNA\">Networking event &#8211; Women in Chemistry<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All events are open to staff and students at University of Edinburgh. Lightning Talks &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.events.ed.ac.uk\/index.cfm?event=showEventDetails&amp;scheduleId=43391&amp;start=&amp;eventssearch=ada%20lovelace&amp;eventStart=0\">book here<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>12pm-12:10pm\u00a0&#8211; Housekeeping and welcome from Melissa Highton, Assistant Principal for Online Learning.<\/li>\n<li>12.10pm to 1pm &#8211; Lightning talks.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Professor Jane Hillston,\u00a0<\/strong>Deputy Vice Principal for Research and Head of School of Informatics will reflect on her\u00a0experiences and the importance of mentors in STEM careers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Athina Frantzana<\/strong>&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0along with\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Edinburgh University Women in STEM (EUWiSTEM) Society<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spreadthewordstem.co.uk\/euwistem-collaboration\/\"><em><strong>Spread the Word<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0conducted an investigation into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students\u2019 experiences of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at the University of Edinburgh. Athina will present her findings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kirsty Lingstadt,<\/strong>\u00a0Head of Digital Library, and\u00a0<strong>Mike Boyd,\u00a0<\/strong>manager of UCreate Makerspace\u00a0will introduce the huge range of creative making opportunities available to students and staff at the University of Edinburgh.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Victoria Madden,\u00a0<\/strong>Digital\u00a0Safety Officer will present her findings which highlight the experiences of women online.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lilinaz Rouhani,\u00a0<\/strong>Equality and Data Officer will present the findings from her research into how different groups have experienced the shift to working digitally from home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ruth Boreham<\/strong>, writer and researcher will tell us stories of\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ada_Lovelace\">Ada Lovelace<\/a>\u2018s Scottish mentor,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Somerville\">Mary Somerville<\/a>\u00a0after whom the data centre at Kings Buildings is named.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"2._The_Wikipedia_editathon_on_Zoom\" class=\"mw-headline\">2.
