{"id":38,"date":"2015-09-25T14:26:06","date_gmt":"2015-09-25T14:26:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/ada-lovelace-day\/?p=38"},"modified":"2024-06-11T15:03:43","modified_gmt":"2024-06-11T15:03:43","slug":"lovelace-raspberry-pi-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/ada-lovelace-day\/lovelace-raspberry-pi-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"Lovelace Raspberry Pi cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ada was the first to express the potential for computers outside mathematics and her theory of how computer sequenced music could be achieved was incredibly accurate. 115 years later, the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/technology\/7458479.stm\">University of Manchester\u2019s Ferranti Mark 1 computer<\/a> performed what is believed to be the very first computer score. The program, which was a composition of <em>Blah Blah Black Sheep<\/em> was written by Christopher Strachey, a maths master at Harrow and a friend of computing legend <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Turing\">Alan Turing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As part of Ada Lovelace Day, a celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), I\u2019ll be taking part in a workshop to demonstrate the capabilities of today\u2019s modern computer software, and to put a twist on things, we\u2019ll be coding our tunes in <a href=\"http:\/\/sonic-pi.net\/\">Sonic Pi<\/a> \u2013 an incredibly intuitive and fun way to write and play music on a Raspberry Pi. We\u2019ll be handing out these compact little cardboard cut-outs on the day, but I also wanted to make these available to anyone who owns a Raspberry Pi and would like their own Ada Lovelace-themed computer case.
