{"id":214,"date":"2017-09-01T15:36:24","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T15:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/ada-lovelace-day\/?p=214"},"modified":"2024-06-11T15:03:43","modified_gmt":"2024-06-11T15:03:43","slug":"ada-lovelace-day-2017-celebrating-women-in-stem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinking.is.ed.ac.uk\/ada-lovelace-day\/ada-lovelace-day-2017-celebrating-women-in-stem\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Women in STEM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday 10th October 2017, the University&#8217;s <a class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\" rel=\"nofollow\">Information Services<\/a> team are running an edit-a-thon to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day 2017 which is <a class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/findingada.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">an international celebration day<\/a> of the achievements of women in <a title=\"Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Science,_technology,_engineering,_and_mathematics\">science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year the event will have a particular focus on Women in Chemistry and #ALD2017 is to be hosted, for the first time,\u00a0 smack dab in the university&#8217;s Science and Engineering quarter in the James Clerk Maxwell Building.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a range of guest speakers in the morning followed by fun technology activities from 11am to 2pm. Full Wikipedia editing training will be given at 2-3pm. Thereafter the afternoon&#8217;s edit-a-thon will focus on improving the quality of articles related to <a title=\"Women in STEM fields\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Women_in_STEM_fields\">Women in STEM<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>In particular, our editing will focus on the 19 petitioners denied admission to Royal Society of Chemistry in 1904 as evidenced in this article: <a href=\"http:\/\/research.library.mun.ca\/506\/\"><em>Pounding on the Doors: The Fight for Acceptance of British Women Chemists. <\/em><\/a><a class=\"twitter-hashtag pretty-link js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WeCanEdit?src=hash\"><s>#<\/s><b>WeCanEdit.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The day will close with Professor <a class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/equality-diversity\/celebrating-diversity\/inspiring-women\/academic-staff\/polly-arnold\" rel=\"nofollow\">Polly Arnold, <\/a>the Crum Brown Chair of Chemistry and winner of the Rosalind Franklin Award, introducing the short film, <a class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chemicalimbalance.ed.ac.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">A Chemical Imbalance<\/a> before taking part in a discussion panel.<\/p>\n<p>All three events are free and open to all so taking part in Ada Lovelace Day is as as easy as 1,2,3.<\/p>\n<p>You can book to attend one session, two sessions or all three.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Programme\" class=\"mw-headline\">Programme<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"1._Talks_and_Fun_Science.2FTech_activities_in_Room_1206C_James_Clerk_Maxwell_Building\" class=\"mw-headline\">1.
